RoadHog 1990/91.Finished on 6th May 1991 by Nigel Cawthorne.
G'day Amosites,
Thank you for taking a look at my game. I have only
had my beloved Amiga fo 15 months, AMOS for 3 months. I realised
that programming, despite the relative simplicity of AMOS, was
going to be a fairly time consuming task (heaps of sleepless nights
peering at the monitor;sound familiar??). To make things easier
I decided to programme a very simple game using only 2 sprites and
screen offset. I did many experiments with the commands associated
with screens and sprites and eventually began to combine them all.
Then I took all my simple routines and combined them
all with some amal strings defined inside AMOS-BASIC (not an amal
memory bank) and RoadHog began to take shape!!
This first version was very slow and jumpy.I was
pretty disgusted with it.So I learnt to use the Amal Editor, and
whaddyknow?? It gave me much more impressive results.
Then, just when I thought it was finished,I decided
to figure out a way to get 8-way joystick control(I had only ever
had 4-way).Then I was lucky enough to have my wonderful mother
buy me a Golden-Image-Optical-Mouse.I redid all the PLAY patterns
and I kid you not fellow Amosites, it improved the visual quality
of the game greatly. This may a point for others to consider.
Although RoadHog is boring and simple, I feel that
the programming of it is fairly well done. Please take the time to
have a peek at the Amal memory bank and send any improvements
which you could suggest for music, graphics, or programming. Also
anyone requiring Soundtracker modules to consider for their own
games can send a disk ( NO I WON'T RIP YOU OFF A DOLLAR BY NOT
RETURNING YOUR DISK ) and I'll send you a demo immediately.(They'll
probably be in the library soon anyway.) If you decided to use
any of my music I wouldn't expect any payment, just a small
credit somewhere in the title screen etc.
I am currently halfway through a major,3 level
adventure and a large demo containg about 8 different Soundtracker
modules. Both will be available soon. The game uses screen offset,
bobs and a dual playfield. It is starting to shape up very well
and is much more fun to play then RoadHog (but then again what isn't?)
See Ya,
Happy Amosing,
Nigel Cawthorne
(Amos,Noisetracker and lead guitar freak.)
